Why Duct Hygiene Is a Fire Safety Issue
Kitchen fires in the UK cause millions of pounds of damage every year, and a significant proportion start inside extract ductwork. Grease deposited on duct walls is highly flammable — a small spark from the kitchen can travel through the duct and ignite the accumulated grease, turning a minor incident into a devastating fire.
Important: Most commercial kitchen fire insurance policies require evidence of regular TR19-compliant duct cleaning. Without a valid certificate, a fire claim may be rejected in full.
What the Regulations Require
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, you are legally responsible for identifying and managing fire risks on your premises. Environmental Health Officers and the Fire Service expect to see documented evidence of duct hygiene maintenance as part of any fire risk assessment.
TR19 (BESA guidance) is the recognised standard. A TR19 cleaning certificate demonstrates that your extract system has been professionally cleaned and graded.
